philosophy as governor. as president clinton said he does have a lot of brass. he's not talking about big change, but all he's talking about is a big rerun of the same policies that created so much hardship for so many americans. and y'all, governor romney has been out here making last-minute promises lately. said he's all about fighting for the middle class. says he cut taxes for everybody. and ask something from nobody, but the problem is we heard those promises before. keep in mind, governor romney lives a few miles south of here in the state of massachusetts. love massachusetts. and i'll play sound a little later of bill clinton in minnesota, but the reality in the minds of voters before sandy we were talking 3 to 5% of the undecided population out there. many others had actually put their stake in the ground and know who they are voting for. psychologically combine sandy, where does it stand? is it like christie said? >> i think to a lot of voters, especially in the states affected, virginia, maryland, pennsylvania, ohio, new hampshire shgz connecticut, in all these key states those voters aren't thinking about election day. they're worried about the impact this is having on their families and friends and communities and rightfully so. in terms when you look at it from 20,000 feet, i don't know what the good answer is. i think this freezes things in a lot of ways in terms of where we were in the election. i don't think it gives a candidate an advantage. what happens here is at some point election nearing and campaigning will begin again friday or saturday. voters will start to focus again. in terms of how it changes the race, i don't think it changes it much w

during the 2008 primary that when hillary clinton was succeeding in getting a large portion of the working-class vote and bringing them back to the democratic party the default for a lot of people on the left is to call that racism the only reason those people were voting for her is because they wouldn't vote for a black man. we all know that is absolutely true for some people but i didn't think it was true for a majority of people and it brought home to me something that i have the feeling in san francisco for a long time and going back to the stories that i did for image and salon and realizing that our sort of black-and-white, literally race relations paradigm wasn't working in a state certainly where the fastest-growing groups are latinos and asians and certainly before this primary that our language was exclusionary and that white liberals in particular seem to be never happier than when they can scapegoat and show that they are the good people and those ignorant people are the trouble. so i began to think about why we continue to use such exclusionary terms about polit

, new hampshire was very solidly republican for many years. recently, i think it is sort of the clinton 1992 phenomenon that has changed that. he one the state twice. in 2000 it went to george w. bush. kerrey., john care the president got a nine point victory in 2008. we really are tossups state. the polls go back and forth. it is difficult to determine who is going to win this state right now. host: is there early voting and how do the hampshire residents vote on election day? guest: there's not early voting, but there's absentee ballot. you have to sign a form saying you are not going to be available on voting day to come to the polls. traditionally, the polls are open from about 7:00 until 7:00. some locations are open until 8:00 p.m. on election day. we have one of the highest voter turnouts in the country. other statistical interesting facts are that we are one of the least taxed states in the nation. the least. we have no income tax, no sales tax. the democratic and republican candidates will pledge on that issue, saying they will not have an income tax or sales tax. our two guber

in youngstown, ohio, for tomorrow. president clinton and vice president biden will still be there. the president is not going to be there. he has an event tomorrow morning in florida but he's not going to ohio. he's going back to the white house. as for mitt romney, we're watching his campaign very closely. he has a campaign event here in ohio tomorrow morning after this event with paul ryan in a few minutes. and then he goes to wisconsin and iowa, two states that should be protected from hurricane sandy for the time being. but, don, i have to tell you, a lot of this is very interesting to watch because we're all sort of wondering how is this hurricane going to affect the race? which candidate will it affect more? will it affect the president because it will be taking him off the campaign trail. he won't be able to campaign quite as much. or will it make him perhaps appear more presidential because he'll be looking at storm damage and that sort of thing? the romney campaign was asked about that earlier today. they did not want to speculate but the obama campaign is also concerned about it becaus

for the small states. not really. we have had three small state presidents in history. bill clinton, franklin pierce. the big states always win for 32 of the 36 years as a slave holding virginian. it's also massachusetts, state two or three, depending on how you count. the next four years, a massachusetts guy. the biggest northern state and virginians, the biggest southern state. not big state/small state. we never actually have a breakdown in american history between big states and small states. the lineup is more geographic. it's coast against center. in fact, a conservative should know this. we have it more for reasons having to do with slavery. if you have a national popular vote, the south would have lost every time. it doesn't let the slave population vote. the three fifths clause. pennsylvania in 1800 has more free people than virginia, way more voters than virginia, way fewer electoral votes. it connects to "today." if you want people to participate, the electoral college dampens it. ohio gets the same number of votes. if you have direct election, you create incentives for governments

guess bill clinton will have to step aside. he was the president's new best friend. now it's chris christie. with that bipartisan blessing, the president looks good. for mitt romney, he was pushed off the stage. this storm was a kind of circuit breaker for about three days. momentum, at least according to the romney camp, had been building up for romney. you lose that. politics is not just about the national voter choice. there's a big dial-up emotions included in this. i think the air went out of the balloon to a certain degree for romney during those three days. does he have time to regen? of course. we are back in the campaign today and will be back at a fever pitch by monday night. look at where the candidates are going. that tells you where the race is really close. they are trying to get that extra point to win. you can do it if you finish up a campaign in a particular states, if the rally is good and everything clicks and you dominate the press in the final 12 hours to 15 hours, you might get an additional point or two out of the few remaining undecided. host: the first call
